Along miles of road surrounded by nothing but the clear blue waters from where the Atlantic Ocean meets the Gulf of Mexico, comes the small Island chain known as the Florida Keys. Connected by the Overseas Highway, the Keys are made up of five islands: Key Largo, Islamorada, Marathon, The Lower Keys, and Key West. All are known for their gorgeous beaches, historic architecture, and a wide variety of attractions and luxury accommodations, making them an ideal location for that South Florida wedding.
Antebellum Charm With Stunning Views
Originally settled by a group of people known as the Calusa, the first Europeans to step foot on the beaches of Key West were the Spanish. Because there was no convenient bridge like there is today, modern development on the island didn’t begin until 1820’s when it was considered a strategic position for a US Naval base. By the late 1800’s, Key West was officially Florida’s wealthiest city. Despite hurricanes over the years, the wealth and industry of Key West’s foundation years can still be seen in Old Town or the Key West Historic District’s antebellum architecture and charm.
